SYMPTOMS

My work in this period is about portraying  the less attractive side of being a woman.
The side we avert our gaze from.

Women can be fighters and as such are praised and acclaimed.
But at times they surrender, succumb and loose.
And when that happens they are looked right through.

We only speak of victories and no one speaks of the defeats.
But sometimes battles are lost.
Mental illness can be a hard one to win.
After a battle of these proportions the disorder left behind can be overwhelming.
It transforms the person right to it’s core, unfortunately it can get ugly.
These are the women I would like to acknowledge, the women that go unnoticed.
Their lives are withdrawn and isolated and they are far away from feeling like a muse.
So I think it is empowering and therapeutic to give them this moment to stand still in time and be one.
Not pretending or hiding, just simply accepting.
My muse is that side of a woman that no one wants to know about. I will be capturing her through the symptoms, the states, the emotions endured.
The series is called The Symptoms.
